in the government's revenue. now, what governor romney says is i can make that up by closing tax expenditures and loopholes, but there's two problems with that. one, the arithmetic. if you you just look at people over $200,000, if you just look at the wealthiest couple of percent, the revenue cuts about $250 billion and the deductions, the broadening of the base gets you back about 160. so you're short about 90 billion. there's the math right there. and i heard absolutely nothing last night in a makes those numbers magically work out. in fact one of the things that governor romney said last night, he said, quote, i will not reduce the taxes paid by high income americans. now, this is a guy going around talking about the extent of his tax cuts. he said i will not reduce the taxes paid. a lot of people are scratching their heads. >> and they'll keep scratching. let me tell you something very interesting, bob. there was another candidate for president who also argued his tax cuts wouldn't benefit the rich. he said it during a presidential debate on the exact same date, october 3rd, in 2000. a de

the moderators are going e to ask governor romney about a lot of the things that you just talked about. i hope the moderator gives governor romney a chance to do what paul ryan said he didn't have time to do and that is explain how they pay for a $5 trillion tax cut. as you pointed out, ed, it is a time problem that is vexing in this budget. it's a math problem. they can't pay for it. if they can't pay for it, then they are going to raise taxes on the middle class. that's what the economic studies have shown. and look, i don't know anybody who thinks we're another tax cut for a millionaire away from a stronger middle class. that's just not how we have built our economy before and it's not how we're going to continue to make our country strong now. >> will president obama confront romney on these issues or rely on the debate moderator to do it? how aggressive will the president be? >> i think the debate moderator will get into this. i think the president will push back particularly on some of these budget and tax issues. i have no doubt they are going to get a chance to talk about the auto bail

this election and we still don't really know what governor romney wants to do as president. that should make you worry. >> senator jim webb, former navy secretary, a vietnam war veteran, spoke with president obama today in virginia beach. and he went right at mr. romney on foreign policy and the wars. and he is -- he's right there when he says that we don't know what mr. romney would do if he became president. mr. romney has said recently and vaguely that he supports what president obama is doing in afghanistan in terms of there being a timeline for leaving but he has also said he was against a timeline for leaving in the past. so really who knows? he's not even trying. the closest we've gotten to any competing cogent republican position on the war is probably what we got from senator john mccain at the republican convention when he said that the afghanistan war just shouldn't end. he also thinks that the iraq war shouldn't have ended. so i'm not sure that it's a politically viable position. even if it is an internally cogent one from the senator. for this year's nominee, it's apparently just no

with governor romney campaigning in ohio this week. senator, it's great to see you. >> good morning, glad to be with you. >> kentucky is i think safe, and i'm from cincinnati and i would imagine that southern ohio is safe and that the work that romney has to do is probably as you go north, it gets harder and harder. is that the case in ohio? >> well, you know, i think in kentucky we've got it pretty well sewn up. ohio is more difficult. but, you know, in 2010, rob portman wins by 18 points, kasich wins for governor, they win the statehouse and the state senate and 10 out of 18 congressional seats and i'm hard-pressed to know how it's different in 2012 than it was in 2010. i think most of the polling is modeling, you know, 2008, and i think it's going to be closer to 2010 than it's going to be to 2008. >> senator, do you think for the votes that romney needs to get in ohio, is it -- does it help him to seem more conservative and get your support and it's, like, some of the conservatives say, wow, i like romney now because rand paul is associating himself with him, or does it hurt people th
